Presentation: Anorexia

Today, presentation about anorexia was very informative. I know I've tried this type eating behavior, where I had obsessive fear of gaining weight. I remember this because an older relative would showed me some of these behavior. Example starvation or fasting she would call it, we not eat for several day and on the days we did eat we ate a lot. We also would exercise excessively, during these fasting periods. I know she did more than this, because she would talk about take diet pills and laxatives, but I to afraid to try something like that. But one thing I've learned about this behavior is that it starts at early age, but as I became more mature it dissipated. I know that I was done with it my junior year high school. I know that young adolescence can be influenced very easily. But today presentation was excellent.

BUSTED

This piece of news was interesting, because I work for U.P.S here in Durango. On Dec 9, 2008 a Arizona D.P.S officer was attempting to stop U.P.S truck, upon stopping the suspect eluded. When searching the truck the officer discovered about 2,118 pounds of marijuana. The suspect took the time to paint the truck like a real U.P.S delivery truck. They even painted a fake license plate that matched another truck that services Phoenix and Tucson area. This was an usual attempt , but I'm sure cities and town's close to the border look for things like this.

Final Research Project:

Today, I did my final presentation on The Advertising of Smoking Tobacco. My focus was on methods of advertising. Some of the things I learned was, tobacco companies used very possible advertising method to attract it's consumers. Early on tobacco companies used method from television to the newspaper. In class we saw one television advertising from the 1960's using characters from the Flintstones cartoon. When I first saw it, I thought it was neat, but disturbing at the same time, I knew it was inappropriate. With this project I had good time and thought my presentation when well.

Can Economic Recession Lead to Health Recession

In the last few months there has been talks about our country heading towards a recession. I never really understand the term very well, so I needed to better understand its definition. According to Merriam-Webster"s Online Dictionary Recession means : the act or action of receding, second a departing procession (as of clergy and choir at the end of a church service), and lastly a period of reduced economic activity. So the news is talking about economic, the more money the consumer spend the better off the economy. But recession is just the opposite, if the consumer is spending less, business than cut back on output. This could even lead to cutting jobs, which increases unemployment. But does this have an affect on a person health, create stress and even of loss health insurance. Not likely, according to Ryan Edwards, an assistant professor of economics at Queens College in New York. Edwards said they use that time to de-stress and take care of themselves. In addition to loss jobs, less work hours and smaller pay check can lead to less take out food, and more home cooked meals. Plus with more time exercise, and quality for oneself.

"No Reservations" Mexico/US Border

During Thanksgiving Break I saw a show on the Travel Channel call "No Reservations" Anthony Bourdain. In this episode Anthony takes his adventure to US and Mexico border. At the beginning of the show he starts from New York City in a well known restaurant, he explains how good the food is, how well prepared it is and who makes it. In this restaurant the chefs are of Mexican Nationalities, who did preparation and cooking of the food. The food that was prepared was NOT Mexican food but food for fine dining. Bourdain becomes curious about these Mexicans how they became well trained chefs, so he travels south to the US and Mexico border starting in Del Rio, Texas. In Del Rio, Texas a border town he finds it interesting how people from US/Mexico share their cultural from preparation of food to speaking the languages. Then he crosses the border to Mexico...Acuna. He discover that most food in Mexico are just not nacho, taco but more authentic. He crosses back to the US to Laredo, Texas, he find a Mexican chef that makes sushi in a Japanese restaurant.... a Japanese restaurant owned by a Chinese lady and the chefs are Mexicans who make Japanese food? I found it interesting because of the diversity of different cultures. WHO PREPARES YOUR FOOD?

The "View"

On several occasions I managed to watch The "View" during the presidential race and on more one occasions has there been a heat discussion about racism and politics. In midst of the arguments were Whoopi Goldberg and Elisabeth Hasselbeck. One heated arguments was the "N" word where they argued about the use of the word. First, I felt that Goldberg was saying that using the "N" word was O.K. , only if had a different meaning. In contrast Hasselbeck, where she explains that she could'nt teach her childern not to say the "N" word, because it's apart of pop-culture. I feel that the issue is basiclly about who's allow to say the "N" word. I felt that it was wasted discussion, with no resolution.
